What is an MRI?

MRI stands for Magnetic Resonance Imaging. It’s a common radiology scan which utilises magnetism, radio waves & computer to generate images of body structures. An MRI is able to identify even tiny changes in body structures.

The MRI scanner consists of a tube encircled by a huge circular magnet. The patient has to lie down on a moveable bed that goes into the magnet. The scanner generates high-resolution images, providing extensive info on the scanned body part.

In the case of a few MRI procedures, contrast agents like gadolinium are utilised to enhance the accuracy of the generated images.

Risks and side effects associated with MRI

MRI is an entirely painless radiology technique and provides the benefit of avoiding x-ray radiation exposure and no side effects.

However, patients with metallic materials surgically fitted within their body are required to inform the doctor/staff before the MRI. This is because metallic materials, chips, surgical clips, or foreign materials (artificial joints, metallic bone plates, or prosthetic devices, etc.) possess the potential to alter the images received by the MRI scanner substantially.

Patients fitted with heart pacemakers, metal implants, or metal chips/clips in or around the eyeballs cannot be scanned with an MRI due to related risks. Likewise, individuals having artificial heart valves, metallic ear implants, bullet fragments & chemotherapy or insulin pumps need to avoid an MRI.

Moreover, patients with claustrophobia or anxiety disorders need to inform the doctor/staff beforehand. A mild sedative may be provided to help reduce the claustrophobic/anxious feeling during the procedure.

MRI Procedure

While lying down inside the scanner, you are required to stay still and breathe normally to ensure precise results.

The MRI staff remains nearby to the scanner, and communication is usually maintained during the test with the help of a buzzer. The buzzer can be used to alert the staff in case you experience any issues.

As the scan takes place, loud, repetitive clicking noises may be heard. At times, you may be injected with a liquid intravenously to improve the accuracy of the images to be generated.

The duration of an MRI varies as per the body part to be scanned, with the procedure usually taking around 30-90 minutes.

Results of an MRI

On the completion of the MRI scan, the computer renders visual images of the body part that had been scanned. These images can then be transferred to film (hard copy) if required.

A radiologist interprets the images and creates a report providing detailed info regarding the results. The doctor will then examine the results and discuss them with you and/or your family members.
