Main purpose of the Synovial Fluid test:
To evaluate the cause of joint pain and inflammation
To diagnose or rule out the following conditions: Autoimmune disorders, Septic arthritis, Gout or pseudogout, Bleeding in the joint
Sample Required:
Needle inserted into the joint and some of the liquid from the joint space is withdrawn
In case of an artificial joint, testing is usually done in the office of an orthopedic surgeon
Test Preparation Required:
No special preparation is needed. Some patients may be instructed to avoid eating or drinking for a number of hours before the test
